Artist statement: Cheryle Bannon
Art is the part of me that makes sense as I navigate my world. It is ‘the journey’ through which I explore and seek to shed light on my own becoming through narrative layered imagery and words that emerge spontaneously through exploration. My art has so many layers just like me. Narrative journeys expose and open me to look deeper at the moments around me and within me. This breathing in, re-interpreting and re-forming through art and the release of the viewers gaze is the energy that allows. I am a seeker and my eye never ceases as I search for meaning that calls me to respond. The archetypal feminine is central to the imagery. I am inspired by history and the images of women it portrays. The feminine mystique is layered and complex and provides an infinite amount of possibilities to explore possible worlds and the stories they hold.
Art is an intuitive process. I see an image that inspires me and ideas begin to bounce off each other as the image forms. I research background information on the emerging idea and develop a bank of visual resources to build on layered with my own personal connections and symbols. To begin the creation journey I create a general coloured background collage and then outline and block in the main forms. I continue to layer by building painted details, collage, stamps and stencil work to overlay. This is the play that is the push and pull of the creative process as the artwork evolves. The image is refined and further layers are added to create depth. Stepping back and viewing from a distance or glancing from the corner of my eye helps me resolve areas that are not quite there and I extend the parts I love. Sometimes a work will lay dormant for months before I am ready to continue the journey but it sits where I can see it and continue formulating its progress from within until I am ready to externalise and commit to completion. This is often a case of ‘leap and the net will appear’ as these are parts of me being laid bare on the canvas in the hope that they will connect to something inside you, the viewer.
My current work is extending on the exploration of the feminine which has always been central to my artistic identity. I am exploring how far I can push the mixed media process to add depth and layers of meaning within my work. Often words are obscured within the layers and the half seen areas draw in the viewer. The myriad of possibilities inspire me and I keep on learning and creating. This is an evolving process where I am open to surprises and redirection as the piece takes shape. As I consider my creations I ask myself ‘what areas do I love’ then I aim to bring the rest of the work to this same place as it is about the journey.
